(10) Rudimentary organs

We have in different animals the same organ in all stages of abortion, till actual suppression & where analogy makes us suppose the perfect organ or rudiment ought to exist – Before this last stage, we have I think cases, where rudimentary organ occasionally appear, which is important – showing tendency long inherited. I think in dioicous flowers a rudiment of stamen will sometimes appear. (In apterous insects a rudiment of wing – In man a rudiment of tail – a rudiment may be more developed as canine teeth in deer Zoolog Proc vol 1836-41 p. 4. (In genera allied to Penstemon occasional appearance of 5th stamen???

Very important to pure long inheritance of tendency. Why surprised when we see long inheritance of rudimentary organ, & ever long inheritance of tendency of rudiment to be developed.
