Hooker says, that it is said, that Hesperis matronalis, originally brought by European settlers to the United States of America, loses its scent the second season, and is obliged to be renewed by fresh seeds from Europe.-

Dr Bigelow of Boston, in New England observed the Æthusa cynapium to be

without scent in America; but seeds transmitted by him produced plants with the same nauseous garlick flavour, as those of Great Britain.
