(Q)

Feb. 1842: = Mr Crawford says he once had one of the Northern Elephants from the unhealthy flats at foot of Himalaya.—They are one or two feet lower smaller & less courageous; their feet are apt to be ill-formed, with irregular toes, which is considered a great "point" in the elephant — their heads ill-shaped & and less concave & whole bodies not so shapely — Hence Mr Cort's contract of their not coming from above a certain Lat: — interesting facts, struggle solely against external nature & not much selection of any peculiar forms.— (Dr Royle doubts about feet)
