March April 1845

Sowerby showed me a Janthina, with last whorl partly separated & tubular, very different from common form — He received 50 of them from some parts of ocean, strange what could have been the cause! Showed me the a most singular common cockle, of which he had received hundreds of specimens from one part of Devonshire.— Does not know about variable species not varying in any locality — says local varieties well known.— There have been three great collections of Helix nemoralis showing range of variation.— Stephens has one.—
