Oct. 30/54/ Hooker believes Rhod. arboreum, from Ceylon Neilgherries & Himmalaya are same species anyhow two Himmalayan forms are connected by intermediate vars. & get their seeds produced (first time) the same varieties, showing the hereditary vars. He particularly searched to see whether these two vars. were distinct in habitat: one generally alpine, but not distinct & cd make out no law. These were the vars. with hereditary hardiness.— like primrose & cowslip.—
