Jan. 23/62/ If asked how curious instinct of Lestris arrived: seems impossible to answer but St. John Highlands p. 217 shows that when various gulls are wounded they vomit up prey in quantity— if Lestris aboriginally tried to take fish from gull, & thrashed them they would vomit, (if same habits as now) & thus instinct might have been acquired
