Nov. 20/54. Hooker in MS. Paper on aberrant genera in Portfolio (11) speculates on result of dividing Australia, with its two specifically distinct E & W Flora, into two islds. —thinks climates being more equable wd destroy, but cannot see "how you are to produce any considerable amount of specific difference in two contiguous spots with the same climate"— Galapagos is much stronger difficulty. In Australia you start with some difference of species, (& different manuring & destroying animals) & you will naturally have different species destroyed & others formed.— Generally I agree that subsidence, (which this in fact this is) is not favourable to new creations.→

[109v]

Seems to consider the Flora E & W. much more peculiar in S. Australia than in West.— As Australia got hotter, the southern plants, after cold period; plants wd travel poleward & accumulate at S. extremity of Australia, & old extreme southern plants wd get modified.—
