July 18 /1855 — In Sandwalk Wood Thorns pulled up this Spring, when leaves just budding — No Charlock growing for thickly entangled with weeds —

Nov. in 3 places each very little larger than palm of hand, I f in one 6 plants in another 3 & another 1-3 (became very cold.—) Now field was in cultivation about 15 years ago, but I broke up this part in - - - & planted it & by end of autumn became a thick entangled mass. July 19 found one other place with 1 Plant & perhaps one or 2 other very young ones.

July 21. dug 3 places nearly 3 ft. square: cut off turf of weeds, & dug up ground one spit deep.—

Aug 1 numerous seedlings came up some of them crucifers from taste

Aug 19 Young Plants now recognizable, but marked by sticks to make quite sure: (a few rather younger) six in one place, 10 in another, 5 in the third = 21 young plants.— Grass fields all round, thick hedges – no charlock even at end at present, from there is closer 120 yd. distant.
