Aug. 10th /55/ H.C. Watson told me that he took some earth from a depth to see if plants wd come up & he saw gardener tread on the bed, & remarked that the experiment was now nearly spoilt, just where foot had pressed them some emerged weeds came up. Henslow says he often remarked byscraper what a number of Plants came up.—

Hooker shows Broom case of Stirling not to be trusted for Broom grows on castle-rock overhanging the meadows.— Henslow has seen a large cistern at top of Ransome works, which is filled only with Hot water from Boiler & is occasionally cleaned out — yet water—snails always appear in it.
