Nov. 25 /56/ Put note on discussion of few species yet many individuals in Arctic. Regions—

Hooker remarked no peculiar genera.— So Lake Superior Le Conte remarks all genera common to Europe & N. Asia. (but to be sure this does not show that some are not peculiar)— again Woodward shows but few (I think) peculiar to Arctic shells. Certainly no Birds or mammals? Narwhals. — May all be accounted for by there being no true Arctic region at Eocene — very small if any during Miocene, & never favourable to life.
