Emma Darwin recorded in her diary that the family started out for Shanklin on 21 July 1858 and arrived on the 27th.

The brown crayon number '18' indicates that this document was filed by Darwin in his portfolio for the subject of Migration.

Shanklin Aug 1 58. Breeze light right on shore from E. S. E. Yesterday extraordinary calm, wind

With flowing tide the number of dead Diptera & Hymenoptera & Coleoptera extraordinary. I saw 3 Carabidæ viz Zabrus, Amara & [Anch…..] (?). 2. Curculionidæ— Haltica some Red Coccinellæ half alive. Some of The Carabids were & 1 Coccinella crawling up fully onto Beach & some I certainly think would have beat that the flowing tide — These insects were on outer edge of wide sand flat.— (Facts showing destruction of insects life & means of transportal.)

(Some insects which appeared dead recovered some after several hours viz a Zabrus 3 Haltica & a pale-mottled [illeg] — like insect & yellow Coccinellæ No Diptera or Hymenoptera recovered, except one Female Art. & Tenthus-like insect & one Ichneumon) — 13 species of Beetles were alive or recovered in 4 or 5 hours - I collected these in course of half-hour.—
