It seems from Mr Christy facts that for distance under 60 miles Pigeons Fly for 30 to 40 geographical miles. Therefore I think estimates of ornithological exaggerated— yet Major Carter.— In longer distances only about 20 geograph. miles.— I suspect that they rest on road.— But how far this will apply to bird blown by gales of wind, I do not know; & such I shd think was origin of those which arrive at Madiera, many of which are not regular migrators. I think 30 miles per hour in gale wd not be too much, when one think of rate which a

Boitard & Corbiere say Turbit flew from Leige to Paris in 14 hours— distance about 170 British miles = nearly 148 Geograph miles = to only 10 8/14 = say 10½ miles per hour.

Moore in Eatons Book say Pigeons flew from Bury St Edmunds to London in 2½ hours distance 61 British miles = 53 miles Geograph = 10 3/5 per half-hour ie 21 Geograph miles per hour

Mowbray says Pigeons flew from London to Liege in 4°· 34' 5· 50' known distance— from Liege to Brussels 45· geographical;— from Brussels to London 195 British = 169½ geographical together = 214½ geograph. miles = 23 7/9 per ½ hour = 47 5/9t2 per hour. All Particular alls given. & date & name of Bird Napoleon say 218 miles in 6 hours = 36 2/6 geographical miles per hour say 36 miles per hour.
