The same means which I have imagined will account for origin of alpine plants in island slowly rising out of sea — must exactly apply to a continent gradually stretching into a different climate, through agency of slow elevation — it will differ from it in greater ease of access of forms from neighboring continents, & in occasional junction of islands.—
