April 1842.

Dr Boot says on the summit of the White Mountains there are Lapland forms of plants, & one which he believes is found no where else except there, & on this one mountain. He seemed to admit my explanation of the low-land plants of such latitudes having in the old ice period bear all arctic forms, & as the snow gradually disappeared from mountains the arctic forms were driven up there & further towards the poles.
