R Brown remarked that some plants found only on limestone in England in more genial climates are found on other soils - valuable & curious fact = The Statice is found on shores & highest mountains of England & R Brown marvelled what some conditions farms this extension. =

At Hobart Town, some plants crawl up & become extraordinarily dwarfed in ascending the Mountain; [insertion:] He Believes, Tournefort has made observ. of same kind on Ararat=

many do not ascend & some peculiar to summit: seemed to consider this degree of dwarfing is very remarkable. On reverse hand some of the English alpine plants do not grow in same perfection, as in Arctic countries for instance Empetrum. One is tempted to believe thus Wellington Mountain being isolated is not fully clothed & has allowed some forms to crawl up. Humboldt argued that species never are acclima[tised]

because alpine plants do not descend beneath their lower zone - but R. Brown seemed to ascend, that the lower part of the mountain ought to be bare of all plants to make this argument good for anything = When discussing the retreats of forest on Altai & in N. America - mem Agassiz oscillations in glaciers - whilst it was was shown by Arago as general change in climate of Europe within same botanical period =
