Nov— 1851.— Like, species, taking all Languages, fossil & recent, some as French, Spanish, & Italian are descended from Latin, & the steps can be traced in the Provençal & Romance Languages, but most of the others as Greek, Latin, Sanscript, Persian, can are all descended from some common unknown source; & this latter ought to be known, to know the intermediate forms.— they are in same state as French & Italian, if Latin & Provençal were unknown. —
