p. 82. Monographie de la Famille par Malpighiaceæ M. A. de Jussieu

p. 82 one division of Family has 2 kinds of flowers; one ordinary, the other without corolla, or mere rudiment, 2 ovaries without style, with a rudimentary male anther, male flower. /

p. 83 In these degraded flowers, "where the greater number of the characters proper to the species to the genus, to the family, to the class disappear, which then laugh at our classifications.

Ch. 7 p. 38 (Flame Orchis case may come here)

Violets in same case. — same thing in Ruellia clandestina, & in Campanula perfoliata, in latter the degraded flowers appear before the others,

p. 85 in Camp. falcata, all the flowers have an androcée et une corolle assez peu developes pour ressembler aux fleurs incompletes, du C. perfoliata, plus q'u aux completes" Impatiens noli-tangere offers same class of facts.

kind of flower, of which only one can be used for classification, as the imperfect flowers wd place plant much too low in classification. Aspicarpa in our green-house has produced only during some years the imperfect flowers, supposing it always did so, shd we place it in another part of the system? Non; Richard with sagacity saw that that though it's theflowers were apetarous & monandrous, yet that the plants belonged to the Malpighiaceæ. "Ces examples peut-être aideront à comprendre comment a des genres d'une organisation assez compliquée, viennent quelquefois s'en rattacher d'autres d'une organisation beaucoup trop simple en apparence" ... ..." comment le type, s'y présente comme effacé, ne conservant plus pour se laisser reconnaitre que quelque trait isolé, mais caractéristique,

This shows that there is something hidden in classification

p. 86 Leaves almost always opposed, except in African acrido campus, which makes only the one exception to the Rule, & one sometimes remarks in its leaves especially the lower ones, a tendency even complete return to opposition. (Ch 7 p. 95) (Q)
