Hooker says he & Bentham have no doubt that Wights remark on Cucurbitaceæ (his own remark on Saliaceæ —) all depend on this that in isolated groups you have nothing near to look to, & therefore you have got to go far; but that this is common to all classes only that when you have 2 or 3 direct & close affinities you do not look so far.
