p 26 Dr. Smith thinks that from disposition of leaves in New Holland plants no generic character can be drawn: Brown thinks this remark can be extended only to certain families or rather genera — for in many tribes the leaves are as constant as in any other part of world.— Although in the Proteaceæ the leaves are variable in no common degree, yet in certain African & Australian genera the leaves assist in indicating generic characters
