Hybrids Ch 9.

July 6th. 1855 castrated 2 flowers of single rose-coloured carnation; but stamens already contabescent: put the 2 flowers in Bottle tied to stake.

July 7th. found flower open with protruded stigma & apparently contabescent stamens: dusted it with pollen of Spanish Pink, var with centre & border rose colour, (from seeds planted in Pots Aug 27th) middle part of each petal crimson under side of corolla white Marked flower with White thread.—

July 8th impregnated (stigmas almost fully expanded at 12° 30' the 2 flowers in Bottle (with petticoat of gauze) with pollen of dark crimson D. Spanish Pink.

July 9th. reimpregnated (but I think superfluously) with pollen of pink Spanish Pink

July 13' Took bottle off 2 flowers of simple carnation (seed few planted Aug 27/55/

July 17' Castrated contabescent 2 flowers of Dianthus deltoides

20' dusted with pollen of Dianthus barbatus (failed)

July 18. Dusted with rose pollen of rose-coloured carnation stigma of castrate & bottled Bottled 2 flowers of Spanish Pink, as above.

July 14th. castrated 2 Spanish Pinks: blood red with extreme edge & centre paler. Bottled do.

— 18 dusted with carnation pollen see other P bottom of last Page.— good deal of seed, planted Aug 27th/55/

Two pods contained (77 in 2 Pods of unequal size.)

Aug 4th twice saw Humbles visiting Sw. Peas

Sept. 26 counted number of seed in some apparently fine pods of Spanish Pink, viz & they had 29, 34 30 22, seeds.— one pod of simple carnation had 30 seeds.─
