June 1862 Monochætum ensiferum

May 31. crossed 2 with pollen of yellow anther black thread

— 1 with do of crimson white thread.

June 1st crossed one with pollen of yellow, black / I think an old pollen as I could of yellow anthers; but hardly any in when pistil straight.

(I put on pollen only once.)

(Two white threads means little pollen of crimson anthers)

(I now find that in old flowers with straight pistil plenty of good pollen in, yellow anthers: I suspect I used in force against too young pollen before.) But very odd that I so chanced considering fertility of the old flowers.)

Jun 2d one white & one black thread

— 5 one black

(Jun 8th I find now in summer pistil remain much shorter time rectangularly bent, not 24º.)

Jun 9th — White Thread

-- 10 Two Black threads

/over

(can the dwarfing of seedlings in Heterocentron have any relation to two sets of plants springing up at different time??

Again I observe pistil (though straight in bud) after bending out in 12º or 18º get straight can be of no use.. I think experiments show that at this time not fully mature — inherited peculiarity from Heterocentron in which it may have dimorphic meaning — or precursor of state of Heterocentron — When Pistil old & straight, deformed & fluctuating fertility of yellow pollen perhaps due to difficulty of getting sufficiency of pollen of their stamens)

Jun 11' — Black Thread

- 23 White & black thread both pollens together

- 27 do do do

(27 3 Black thread already dropped off!

All the above cross fertilised only once

Mr Horwood send some seed, marked black & white — Of latter several came up & two are now Dec. 9th 1862 alive; of them marked black (ie from pollen of yellow-sepal-faces anther) not one plant came up.; perhaps can hardly be trusted. —
