John Horwood (1823-c.1880) was the head gardener of Darwin's neighbour G.H. Turnbull. 1862-63 Horwood superintended the building of Darwin's hothouse. Darwin acknowledged his assistance in Orchids, p. 158.

Oct 2. 1862 Heterocentron roseum

Mr H. [Horwood] brought me 2 seedlings no II from the pollen of yellow petal-facing anthers; not a dwarf. –

These two plants differ in one having white sepals & much darker purple long anthers. The colours of the anthers are slightly variable in same plant. They are the same with H. mexicanum from Kew. – I find in latter that occasionally pistil in old flower pistil turn up from ∟ to nearly 45° (in bud straight). So it is in both seedlings, but in that with dark purple anther (zinc label) this oftener occurred.

I compared pollen from the purple anther & from yellow anther & all about the same viz from 4 1/2 to nearly 6/7000. I begin to suspect like Clarkia elegans purple anther, though large, are tending to abortion – In plant with darker purple anther pistil often half decayed

Heterocentron roseum seedling

Oct 4. 1862 fertilised 5 ft with pollen of yellow anther (white thread) & 5 with pollen of purple anther (black thread) – not very well done & done only once.

This was a seedling from yellow pollen. The one seedling yet seen of purple pollen, is now in flower & in yet a dwarf, at half as high as seedlings from yellow pollen!!

Can all my seedlings be homomorphic & of same form?? – I have now seen 3 all identical with the parent form. –

(The Plant was badly treated & all the pods dropped off.)

[53]

Dec. 8 1862 Mr Horwood reports that four seedlings no I (ie produced of purple sepal-facing anthers) (which were the dwarfs) have not set one pod! Whereas two plants of no II (ie seedlings product of yellow petal-facing anthers) one has set 35 pods & the other 5 pods. – Now this is most curious as parent plant would not set any pods. – N shows again the demonstration some difference in action of pollens. –

with respect to Monochætum
