Report of the 9th (1839) Meeting of th Brit. Assoc Owen on British Fossil Reptiles - solid structure of back of head of Ichthyosaurus "as this is an adaptive rather than a typical conformation, it affords but a slender argument for their affinity" (repeated elsewhere)

p 97. "the inferior or Lacertian Saurians" the intermediate or annectant characters of Ichthyosaurus between the Crocodiles & Lizards" is exemplified in remarkable manner by that part of both jaws which supports the teeth: (what is order of Crocodiles & true Saurians.)
