Besides the probability of no deposits &: no organic remains in open ocean - we have demonstrative proof, where one formation lies conformally on another much older one with no line of separation (showing that it did not probably exist on land)

The oldest formation will always tend to be oceanic, for thickest, widest - & will be probably the largest undisturbed by elevation & denudation.
