Mr Prestwich shows (Geolog. Journal Vol 3. p 354) in admirable Paper, that Eocene beds of England consist of 3 great stages, having only a small percentage of fossils in common - Hence duration much longer - Believes all formed during subsidence - Smaller stages even in these main stages -

p 365 Some of the species, though common to all these groups "form, in each of them, distinct varieties". No doubt d'Orbigny wd consider species
