In speaking of Highness & lowness of a class we always look to higher members - when discussing families of mammals we do not look to Ornithological when that of fish not to Amphioxus. In snakes not to worm like certain Amphibian

In each class N. S. will generally preserve & form the highest & exterminate the lowest & hence causes Gradations of Organization. Begin with what is meant by Gradation.
