There is no record of Robert Alfred Cloyne Austen (1808-1884), geologist, giving a paper to the Geological Society on 4 December 1839, so this may be from personal communication. See Darwin's referee report to an earlier paper by Austen in GeolSoc-COM-P4.2.8

Mr Austen remarked that the forms of shells in the S. Devonshire limestone are Carboniferous, although only about five species actually identical - this is first, what we may say of two neighbouring countries
