1877 Sleep Petiole rise at night

 Oct 1s

Melilotus officinalis. The petiole of leaf formed angle with stem below beneath, of 124° when awake, & when asleep 131° 30', & so had risen 7° 30'. A second leaf petiole formed with stem beneath angle of 106° & when asleep 115°, & so had risen .

Oct 2d on on one leaf, terminal leaflet rose 8°, in another leaf rose 59°; the difference depends on position which leaf holds being sometimes inclined upwards or downwards or horizontal when awake This terminal leaflet, then rises more or less, rotates on axis so as to have upper face nearly vertical & bend to one side. The 2 lateral leaflets approach each & bend downwards towards apex of whole leaf & thus meet the now vertical terminal leaflet. In some one cases there is no change in angles between sub-petiole of terminal leaflet & main petiole; in another case the angle become a little less.
