Horace Phaseolus vulgaris

DOWN, AUG. 15TH.

1877.

DWARF KIDNEY BEAN. AT 8-45 YESTERDAY P.M OBSERVED THE ANGLES WHICH THE LOWER PART & THE UPPER PART OF THE PETIOLE MADE WITH THE HORIZON, & AGAIN OBSERVED THE SAME ANGLES & FOUND THAT THEY HAD NOT ALTERED PERCEPTIBLE.

IN ANOTHER LEAF OBSERVED ONLY THE LOWER PART OF THE PETIOLE AT THE SAME TIMES AS THE LAST EXPERIMENT, & FOUND THAT IT HAD MOVED FROM 26 DEG. TO 32 DEG. THUS HAVING FALLEN THROUGH 6 DEG.

[insertion by Darwin:] when it went to sleep. On the night of the August 15th I observed the plants out of doors & found most of them with leaflets drooping & asleep.
