Oats— Apogeotropism

Kept in darkness

A cot was arranged so as to project 45° below horizon. & first dot made at 9° 15' by at 9° 15 by 12° 17' it rose in almost absolutely straight line & circumnutated, I believe on horizontal roof.—

Another seedling projected 36° below horizon, but filament came in contact with rim of pot after it had risen above the horizontal plane. — Part traced almost absolutely straight, with hardly a vestige of circumnutation — Neither of these lines worth tracing, so nearly straight only a trace of zig-zag, & movement so energetic.

In evening they were bowed so that the tips of several touched & pressed against overarching Soil — They had made left slight furrow behind, so that curvature must have gone beneath ground; as indeed cd be seen by aid of plumb-line & exposing hypogean part; but this not at all surprising as geotropism wd act every where.—
