Sept 10, 11 12. 1878

Apogeotropism of Hypocotyl of Beet Seedling

Beta vulgaris

Sept 10th a seedling was arranged so that Hypocotyl stood at 50° above Horizon & movement traced on vertical glass — seemed to circumnutate greatly before it become nearly upright— but not magnified enough

Sept 11. A partially etiolated seedling 2 inches tall was placed so as to stand only 31° from vertical, & movement traced on Horizontal glass [sketch]

Kept in darkness, & when each dot made illuminated dimly from vertically above. — See tracing— between 9° 38' am & 10° 35— at close was probably beginning to circumnutate, as next morning stood at nearly same point — Lines slightly zig-zag— Some slight indication of circumnutation —
