June 21st 8º 55' a.m 1879. Gossypium herbaceum— radicles extended horizontally over water — tips well cauterised— Black dot at 9 mm from apex. To see if destroys Geotropism.
1º P.m all caustic straight
(1) caustic 4º 40' horizontal — not grown 9 m. (22d 7º 45 mm a.m after 23º Horizontal; length 15 mm
8. 55 [-] 7. 45 [=] 1. 10 24 [-] 1. 10 [=] 22 50
(2) caustic 4º 40' near 12 mm.— quite horizontal (22d 7º 45 horizontal & described on cork 17 1/2 mm.)
(3) caustic 4º 40' 12 mm Horizontal (22d 7º 45' a.m — horizontal, 21 mm.)
(4) caustic 4º. 40 9 mm. Horizontal (ie not grown) (22 dead) ✔
(5) caustic 1º P.m. 4º 40 10 1/2 mm — slightly up down turned but straight, unlike those acted on by Geotropism (22d 7º 45' a.m— not curved but slightly inclined 12 mm)
(6) caustic 4º 40' 10 mm. Horizontal (22d 7º 45' a.m— quite horizontal 14 mm)
(7) (0) 1º little up downturned 4º 45 — apex vertically down
(8) (0) 1º little up downturned 4º 45 considerably geotropic (22d 7º 45' a.m. almost vertically down
(9) do— 4º 45 almost vertically geotropic— 22d 7º 45 a.m quite vertically down

Conclusion
21' 4º 40' P.m. It is certain that touching apex with caustic — prevents geotropism.
In radicles not touched curvature extends for about 6 mm.—
Length of blackened or only discoloured apex in the 6 touched radicles from 2/3 to 1 mm.)
(See remarks under 22d. 7º 45 —22d. 7º 45. evidence now after 23 hr far better evidence for growth great & yet 3 have remained horizontal.
[125v]
10 (0) 4º 45 slightly Geotropic— 22d 7º 45am. almost vertical
(11) (0) 4º 45' vertically geotropic — do quite vertical
(12) (0) 1º plainly down turned' 4º 45' vertically geotropic do do.
