Horse-Chesnuts

Jan 23d. 11°. a.m. 1879

3 Radicles marked 15 mm from tip 2 of which painted black with Oil & Lamp black for 4 mm. in jar over water— sawdust

On Chimney Piece in Study

very cold— weather.—

Jan 23d 12° 58° F 4. 30 59°

4° 30' P.m white tip alone a little turned down.

9. 45' white bent for rather more than 4 mm one of black: a little bent.

Jan 24th White tip. 8 1/2 mm (measured to convex side) bent rectangularly down.

Long radicle with black tip 8 mm bent but not quite rectangularly, so white part curved.

Shorter one with black tip only the painted tip 4 mm in length bent at only 45° down. Total length 16 1/2 mm.

Total length of white longer black tip 20 m. m.

Tip with gum does not check geotropism (over)

(1

Jan 25th 8° 30' a.m— no change both black tips bent greatly down, but not quite so vertically as the 1 white tip.— It is clear that black grease does n on tip does not prevent geotropism, only slightly checks it, as wd naturally follow from some injury.

But this bad plant for observation, as only so small a portion of radicle bends.

Horse-chesnuts— Radicles

Feb. 2d 10° 35' a.m. — Black dot 8 mm from end— 2 with pins with nothing done to. 3 with tips well touched with Caustic. 4° 30 P.m no marked effect

Feb. 3d 8° 45' am— The 2 with white tips well geotropic & 2 with blackened tips nearly as much curved down, but the tips are only very slightly blackened— One seed with very long radicle is quite Horizontal & its tip is well killed, yet it is now, 11 1/3 mm in length & so has grown 3 1/3 mm!!!

Feb 3d 9° a.m reversed all the 5 seeds & put fresh fresh caustic on the three (over)

(2

Feb. 5' 10° 30' a.m— — The 2 reversed radicles with white tips have not reversed there tips & are again geotropic, but neither quite at right angle

(The one with black tip which was horizontal is still horizontal, but is killed far from tip & has not increased in length & is only 11 mm long — so goes for nothing.)

(A 2d with black tip has straightened itself but is not geotropic & yet is 25 mm long!

(The third with black tip is now geotropic in rev reversed manner & is 16 mm in length).

(Very doubtful indeed whether blacking N.B. tips any effect.

(3

Feb. 12th 1879. Radicles of Horse-chesnut

10. 30' a.m.—

1 Horizontal 13th 8° a.m bent down at right angles—

1 Horizontal (pin) well rubbed on extreme apex with Lunar Caustic.

13th 8° a.m. This was far too much rubbed for whole apex Killed some way from apex— not in the least curved down, but then has grown barely at all viz from 8mm to 8 1/2 m.m

(4

Feb 23d 8° a.m. 1879

Radicle Æsculus

1 long & 1 short (pins) with apex once pressed with L. Caustic

The short one bent rectangularly down

The long one, which was in very good state not at all geotropic

1 long & 1 short— less healthy radicles with nothing done to.—

Feb 24 8° a.m. The short radicle one slightly bent down— The long one hardly at all

(Transverse radicles in water)

Feb. 28th 8° a.m. —

Both the short ones— ie with caustic & one without, about equally geotropic

Both the long radicles with & without caustic only very slightly geotropic, & were not at all so the day before yesterday.—

(This goes for nothing)
