Jan 2d 1878. Scarlet Runner — Geotropism & tips with Lunar Caustic
10° 30' a.m— Radicles 7 long radicles extended horizontally in darkened jar over water — Dots at 10 mm from apex
(1) tips rubbed with Lunar Caustic all round — Jan 4th 8° a.m after 21h 30m
tip Hooked laterally or horizontally
(2) do tip Hooked obliquely to gravity
(3) do do do
(4) do quite straight & horizontal no effect— yet grown for 15 mm from tip to black dot
(5) 0 nothing done to 4th 4th 8° a.m tip a little bent a from centre of gravity! but grown a little for now 12 1/2 mm. from tip to black dot
(6) 0 do horizontal— yet considerably grown for now 17 1/2 mm from black tip to dot!!!
(7) 0 do slightly geotropic
In every way an utter failure: I begin to believe in periodicity of germination, & if made to germinate at wrong period — will not succeed—
