Geotropic Beans Caustic I

8.55 am Jun 23' 1879

Faba germinated in sawdust How many & employed when roots are from 3 to 5 cm in length. Each one marked at 10 mm with asphalt dot + root. Placed in fine ؟ Placed Horizontally sieved earth rather dry in a vessel perforated bottom & top; some were planted rather deep but most had only 2 cm of earth over them. Caustic with pointed bit of Ag No 3 I think I rather more than usual

Some Phaseolus multiflorus in the same way— Vessel stands on table in big room. Temp at noon 20º C

Examined at 6.35 pm. i.e after 9º 40'

Faba- caustic 16 mm, 18 mm 18, 15, 16, 20 — none of these show any geotropic bending

The non-caustic ones were harder to measure because of being bent —

Faba (caustic) Geotropism

June 29. 11 45 am caustic some abo above & some below in both cases at the extreme tip (say 21 hr) [calculations not transcribed]

June 30 — 8. 35 am

Three cauterised on the upper side are sharply bent downwards

Three on the lower side only faintly bent as shown in sketches. In No 3 the black at the tip was very faint

They were all marked at 10 mm from tip but only the marks were hidden by dirt—: in most No 3 measured 26 mm—

The Three control beans to which nothing was done are fairly bent but no as well as they ought to be

Goebel picked out 2 of the 3 upper caustics as the best geotropic of the lot, & 2 of the under caustics as the least bent [sketch]

[4v]

[calculations not transcribed]

[182]

It is clear they are not well geotropic, Sachs thinks earth dry — Goebel made sections of Faba roots; the root cap is killed up to but not all of it ؟ when it dies away is is clear uninjured; the tissue of the root is normal except close within the root cap where a row of 6-8 cells is dark orange, G says killed. He expressed it by saying punctum veg was killed

some radicle were examined by an experience physiologists
