Radicles of beans
Sept. 28-9th 1879
28th F. cut off at 7° 15' P.m 1 1/2 m.m of tip of 6 radicles & placed horizontally over water.— 29th 7° 40' a.m ie after 12 hr these 6 show no geotropism: they
now vary in length Horizontal between 47 & 23 mm. & judging by eye have grown
Frank has described this state at 7° 15 4°. 30' P.m. & has shown great growth
(Sept. 30th 7° 45' a.m.— i.e. after 21°. were a few degrees below 4 3 still quite horizontal with reference to Bean itself; one very slightly geotropic. The 2 others ie aft 36° have grown against side of jar & are mechanically bent down.
Five Control radicles placed at 7° 45' P.m horizontally over water & now 7° 45 am
(29th) aft 12° they are all geotropic 4 strongly & 1 slightly.— They now vary in length between 39 & 22 mm.
see Frank page (B) for state at 4° 30' P.m. 29th.
Sept 30th. 7° 45' am well geotropic, but not so well as often occurs.
6 Radicles Vertically dependent Conclusion
28th 7° 15' P.m F. cut off 1 1/2 mm of tips & suspended vertically over water; now 29th 7° 45' a.m, they are straight down, but 2 of them are strongly curved, & 1 moderately curved by Sach's curvature—
Marked by Big Pins to show degree of curvature
30th 8° a.m marked others with Big Pin to show amt of Sachs Curvature.
Oct 4th— These have not grown irregularly & Sachs curvature not modified sensibly — they have grown greatly in length.

Faba. (Long Pod) Sep 28. 1879 7.15 pm in Study with fire
1 1/2 mm cut off and put in damp air 6 vertical, 6 [horizontal] also 5 control (not cut) put horizontal.
Jar of Jar with verticals Radicles.—
Sep 28 Sep 29. 4. 30
(1) = 27mm — 46 m.m. Vertical — 18° Sachs
(2) = 41 69 45° Sachs — 65 mm Sep 30. 8 am
(3) = 21 — 36 Sep 30 8 am 73mm
15° Sachs tip bent in reverse direction
(4) = 29 14 . 31 — about 40° Sachs & about 25 to the left
(5) = 17 29— 53 48° Sachs (Sep 30 8 am. 67 mm)
(6) = 17 — 29 15°. Sachs
Therefore have all angles measured with vertical (see grown greatly, though tips cut off Back)
Jar with Horizontal Radicles
Sep 28 Sep 29— 4 25 pm
1 = 17 — 34 4° above Horizon
2 = 26 — 49 .... 18° below
3 = 37 — 61 . Main root 8° below, extreme tip bends slightly up
4 = 20 — 35 8° below
5 = 32 — 53 5 terminal centimeter 10° below, basal part horiz
6 = 21 * 38 5 below
* Cut off about 1 3/4 mm

Faba— Controls
Sept. 29th 4 30' P.m.
Placed Horizontally over water with tips not cut off.
1 — abt 45 below
2 45° below
3 30.
4 80 below
5. 45 below → Only last centimeter bent & abt 45 below is now 48mm & was 35 ∴ has grown

Tips cut off Final conclusions
Sept 28th & Oct 5th—
Control put in same case, but we had tried very many score & knew perhaps that tall when a half been [illeg] geotropism in 12 hr
14 [+] 5 [+] 4 [=] 23 had tips cut off for 1 1/2 mm. After 12 hr. these were not affected by geotropism, where the controls become greatly geotropic in this time. — being inclined at 45° below horizon After 24 hr. some became slight showed a trace geotrop only [illeg] about 10° beneath horizon, whereas & — one alone considerably viz 40°.
They had all increased greatly in length
They showed no great irregularity in growth
6 with tips 1 1/2 mm were placed vertically down & these after 6 days have not grown very irregularly
see above 23 [+] 9 with 2 m. [+] 6 vertic [=] 38 — No 37. on account of 1 with punctum not cut off
