Sept 28' 1878. Beet nachwirkung of apogeotropism. Beta vulgaris

Two pots with seedlings were laid horizontally at 8° 29' a.m & after Hypocotyls had become highly oblique the pots were placed vertically at 11° 45'. — 46'

Pot I. at 12° 4', at 12°. 22'. & at 12°. 33 still pursued same course, as if still oblique; but at 12° 46' reversed course & so continued. From this it follows that nachwirkung certainly continued for above 37' perhaps for 48', certainly not for for 61' for by this period had reversed movement.—

Pot II.— told nothing for Hypocotyl apparently began circumnutating in a still inclined position after 48'— but pursued former course for at least 37'.

Sept 29th 1878 Beet Hypocotyls— made rigid not apogeotropic. Beta vulgaris

9° 30' a.m Fastened rigid fine glass-rods to 2 Hypocotyls with shell-lac whole length & 3 fine threads: placed pot horizontally in dark— at 5° 30' P.m, all four seedling bent up vertically, except the 2 which were still quite horizontal.—

Sept 30' 8° 20' a.m — one of these seedlings had bent down apparently due to weight of rod, & in freeing rod broke at base which seemed rotten.— Freed the other of pipe only slightly injured & placed pot horizontally in dark to see if it will now bend up. — 5° P.m no Killed— so experiment goes for nothing.
