Red Cabbage young seedlings with Cots. Apogeotropism

April 4th. Tracing of movements of 2 seedlings— In each case glass filament fixed between the 2 Cots— Pot laid horizontally — traced [sketch] on vertical glass, illuminated during observations in front—

Apogeotropism acted with wonderful rapidity— Hypocotyl fell at first from weight; but between 9° 25' & 12 or 1° rose to so very highly inclined position. Filaments rather retarded movement, for many of the other seedlings by 5° P.m were parallel to surface of ground & had moved through 90° in about 7° or less— Hardly a trace of circumnutation in act of rising — At 1° (ie after only 2° 30') began to circumnutate & at first in direct opposition to apogeotropism.
