Cyperus alternifolius. (before observed)

(Apogeotropism)

June 3d to 7th Young stem only 5 1/2 high, but leaves fully expanded, laid horizontally, & Kept in darkness & movement traced on vertical glass. [sketch]

End of stem 6 1/2 inches from glass. —

See Tracing— Laid down 10° a.m on Jun 3d, at first fell an atom — next day did not rise. On 5th began to rise though very slightly & so continued till Jun 7' 11° — Course slightly zig zag. The chief point of bending was near base & at close of observation was turned upwards only 11°. Wonderfully little & slowly apogeotropic considering observed from morning of 3d to 7th. ie 4 days
