First pair of true & very small leaves sleep as beautifully as the old ones petioles & all.—

These leaves have not bloom or very imperfect if any.

March 3d. The 3d leaf & the 2 first are distorted of the gyrating leaflets.

Ap. 16. Sixth leaf above Cots. no little rudimentary leaves— Plants probably descended from one with simple leaves. — This leaf with perfect bloom & sensitive to fine stream of water

May 14th Eleventh leaf above cotyledons has now produced an unusually large single lateral leaflet some way down petioles & in unusually rapid movement but not by jerks

[125]

Desmodium gyrans.

Ap. 9. 1878 There is a note somewhere about bloom on first pair of leaves— tried again today— on the none on the old Cots— on 2d pair perhaps a trace of bloom — on 3d true leaf some bloom for water wd not adhere well — on 4th leaf as good bloom as possible— could not make drop of water adhere at all.—
