April 16' 1881 Desmodium gyrans

Young seedling in big Pot— with Cotyledon

2 first young leaves above cots washed both with water at 96º F & on one side red mark— put on near base & now at 11º 45' a.m apex— 2 drops of distilled water & put nothing on the other after being washed.— Before N. E. window in study.— (2 days)

April 17th 9º. a.m. young plant 3 inches high. 2 youngish leaves 2 spots of each both side washed with camel Hair-brush & water at 96º F, & then drops put on 2 drops on one side of both marked with red crosses — making 4 spots with drops & 4 spot without drops.

Ap. 17' 9º a.m— great old Plants— 3 leave sponged very gently with old sponge with water at 96º— Leaves oldish & somewhat injured— & then 3 spot on 2 of the leaves & 2 spots on 1 leaf — making 8 spots — the opposite sponged side left dry — all before N.E. study windows = (12 drops on whole page)

April. 16 a seedling from Sir John— still with 2 old Cotyledon— the 2 first young leaves well protected by bloom — I cd not get drops of water to remain on.— Cots. themselves can be easily wetted.—

See if it will move when shaken—

Ap- 24. 8 a.m Two first leaves on seedling in big pot, with white thread with, 2 drops on right side no trace of a mark.— (Ap. 29 seedling died)

(Big plant, Lower leaf, (red yellow wool) 2 drops right sides there are brown specks in both places, but then tip of leaf is somewhat browned

Second upper leaf (red wool) left side 2 drops no effect

Third leaf (white thread) right side 3 drops, no effect

(Ap. 29' These 3 oldish leaves no effect whatever produced.)

Young plant in separate pot— 2 young leaves 2 drops on left side of leaf with white thread— 2 drops on right side of opposite leaf — no effect from these 4 drops. —

(Ap 29th I think I see effect on leaf without with white thread).

May 3d. no plain ill effects on any of 3 leaves

April 29th 1881 Desmodium gyrans

Young plant in pot— 2 leaves washed both sides with sponge at about 96º— & then put on 2 drops of distilled water on one side of both leaves making 4 drops— marked places with minute black dots of black grease.—

Plant Kept in hot case under bell-glass in Hot House.—

Placed in Hot-House with drops of distilled water at 10º. 45' a.m. 29

May 3d. 7h 30' A.m no f ill effect

— 17 No ill effects though 2 whole leaves very unhealthy with mid-ribs brown from being pinned down or more probably from 4 dots of black greases; but the 4 spaces where drops of water rested all this long time not affected or browned—

Sun-light must be necessary for case was kept hot enough.—
