1862 Oct 29th 10 P.m. a large Mimulus exposed to good dose of Chloroform for 1' 30' began to shut stigma; in under 2' quite shut. Also lower hip of corolla twisted up & down in oddest movement.— Flower Killed. — Stigma nor corolla closes at night.—

Oct. 31st 2° 45' gave cut off flower 10 minims of Sulph Ether for 10'.— no movement; & afterwards stigma completely paralysed. Put flower in water,

X runs little way down leaf where end pinched.

Nov 7. I find to day that I can make one leaflet move & not the other — Plant very torpid & dead— Hardly any one of previous results can be trusted. — 9°. 30' Plant not gone to as sleep, so former observations on sleep after ether utterly worthless.—

Nov 14th Mimulus at 3° gave flower cut 10 minims of Sweet Spirits of nitre for 10' (to 3d 10' P.m); but in fact from position of Ether very little evaporated, yet was quite incapable of movement afterwards.

Did not close from stimulus— In 1/2 hour, but in had not recovered sensitiveness; but in in 1 1/2 hours was sensitive, & corolla had become loose: I noticed this before.— I opened again in about 1/4 of hour & when touched closed again.— Again it reopened soon after last touch (with in corolla) & I gave it for 10' two 5 minims of Chloroform , too much towards close of [illeg] the stigma moved & shut; but pistil looked withered.— Yes Killed

April 14th. 63 gave a cut flower 2 drops of chloroform for 5', did not shut but was insensible, in 40' h had reacquired sensibility & closed on being touched opened again & was again sensible.

Ap. 15. gave another Mimulus good dose of Chloroform for 8', stigma did not close. — soon became sensitive again.—
