July 16th 1878
[in margin:] Sensitive
From F. M. letter these seem distinct sp. from sea-side one.─
Observation with dates are some where recorded ─ now the pants are 3 & 4 inches high─ with 3 perfectly developed true leaves, but the Cots are still fresh & sensitive so as to ripen when pinched ─ At 10° P.m The Cots in close opposition to stems!
{A plant 5 inches high with 4 weak developed leaves had Cots vertical at 7.30' P.m
Sleep & Sensitivity first observed when quite young on from 13th (34 days)
(Used for age)
(The perfec true squirted with water at 81° F. dropped itself, but made much shaking does not seem to act on them
It afterwards (4° P.m) rose again (over) over
[80v]
4 or 6 Leaflet to each leaf — The 2 All four make packet, hanging vertically down, for petiole rises much, the 2 terminal leaflets lie within the 2 succeeding & lower leaflets— (Yes Petioles rise greatly) [sketch]
July 17 I pinched with pincers during 1' one of basal lateral leaflets & in a few minutes certainly became almost vertical.
Same experiment with some other leaflets hardly acted.
