Cassia neglecta Sleep of N… Ferns B

July 16th 1878

[in margin:] Sensitive

From F. M. letter these seem distinct sp. from sea-side one.─

Observation with dates are some where recorded ─ now the pants are 3 & 4 inches high─ with 3 perfectly developed true leaves, but the Cots are still fresh & sensitive so as to ripen when pinched ─ At 10º P.m The Cots in close opposition to stems!

{A plant 5 inches high with 4 weak developed leaves had Cots vertical at 7.30' P.m

Sleep & Sensitivity first observed when quite young on from 13th (34 days)

(Used for age)

(The perfec true squirted with water at 81º F. dropped itself, but made much shaking does not seem to act on them

It afterwards (4º P.m) rose again (over) over

[80v]

4 or 6 Leaflet to each leaf — The 2 All four make packet, hanging vertically down, for petiole rises much, the 2 terminal leaflets lie within the 2 succeeding & lower leaflets— (Yes Petioles rise greatly) [sketch]

July 17 I pinched with pincers during 1' one of basal lateral leaflets & in a few minutes certainly became almost vertical.

Same experiment with some other leaflets hardly acted.
