Thalia dealbata

Circumnutation

Plant so large, that I could get only some very small leaves (arising beneath the larger ones) under the roof of case under skylight.— The lamina of leaf chiefly observed (the smaller one) was only 2 inches in length, supported on petiole 9 1/2 inches— Distance from apex to glass above 13 1/2 inches

[in margin:] (Temp. 23d & 24th generally 21° C.)

The leaf lamina stood almost vertical, with one edge towards me, so that all movement to right (see upper Tracing) [sketch] shows movement towards back of leaf & somewhat downwards, & movement to left is to front or rising. The sole & considerable interest interest of Tracing is that between 8 6° 40' a. m & 4° P.m. on 23d the apex described 2 ellipses; & recording that the ascending & descending lines do not quite coincide.—

The older larger leaf with lamina 5 inches in length or petiole 12 1/2 inches high. (with apex 10 inches beneath glass) also stood almost vertically & was observed only during the 22d & this made 1 very small & a 2d larger lateral an ellipse at or in plane at right angles to the up & down movement between 11° 55' & about 7° P.m. —

Blade descends (or goes to left right) during day & morning night & morning ascends during evening night — & ascends during afternoon & evening
