Lychnis githago
Contraction of Hypocoty
Oct. 28th 5° P.m. 1 Big Pin — Black=mark at base of Cot. to top of stick driven in soil on level— Plant untied from stick, prostrate on ground
[sketch] Nov. 29th (?)
Nov. 29th — measured both specimens — but the mark lost in this case, so measured only to base of Cot.
Second specimen 2 Big Pins — Length of Hypocotyl tied loosely to stick—
[sketch] Nov. 29
(The hypocotyls of young plants show no trace of the curious folds.)
The hypocotyl is striated longitudinally & now with 2 deeply sinuous prominent prominent ridges moving down each edge, & these ridges send forth transverse branches— The formation of these sinuous ridges must have shortened & contracted the Hypocotyl greatly.— The short part of Hypocotyl beneath ground & the radicles not with these ridges.—
Does Radicle ultimately contract?
[36b]
March 8th 1879— Measured distance of tips of 2 young leaves on noon yesterday & again at 10° P.m & they were far nearer standing almost vertical, whereas at noon they stood only highly inclined — but such cases as this may possibly be merely a slight nocturnal rise, like cots. of Cucurbitaceæ.—
