Sept. 21st— Down

Chloroform

At 8° 18' put plant under same receiver with 4 drops of Chloroform for 20'—

At 8° 46'-47' put on many atoms of raw meat & in 13' to 14' all the atoms, but one carried to centre!! So hardly any or no effect— What can be the meaning? Had the leaf particular constitution? Are all former experiments erroneous? The night had been cold & day cold. (If I try again, try for 30' with 6 drops)

Sept 13. At 8° 55 I put a plain leaf, & one from the above spe. which had been exposed for 20' to Chloroform & with sol. of C. of ammonia 1 gr. to 1 oz. & in 30' some a few spherical aggregation were visible in some tents in both specimens; rather the finest in the Chloroform specs.

In 1° 35' splendid spheres, numerous in both specimens.—

[45v]

N.B I see plenty of green chlorophyl granules at the bases of the tentacles.

(Are not these dissolved by C. of ammonia??)

5° P.m. I can see none. (with 2/3 & middle eye-piece) is the Raw meat injurious— or in the 2 leaves which have been in the C. of Ammonia (1 gr to 1 oz) for whole day

(Sept 23d. After exposing 4 leaves to C. of Ammonia 1 gr to 1 oz. & to infusion of raw meat for 24° the chlorophyll granules on side of cells at base, just as plain as ever)

Are these globules really Chlorophyll? Dutrochet speak of globules?
