It is a curious instance how gradually parts become rudimentary thus with M. albida, beneath the large leaflet with its little opposite, there are rudiments of another pair excessively reduced, & which wither almost as soon as the leaf is of full size. The curious point is that the rudiments on the inner side, (ie on side with small leaflet) is smaller than that on the opposite side— These rudiments are leaf lancet-shaped & fringed with long hairs.

Rudimentary leaflet— linear, a little narrow at base, with long hairs on each margin & terminally on spines; arise near each other. The smaller one not half as broad broad as the larger one

Larger one 7/100 of in. in length, including terminal spine

Smaller ones are 5–6/100 in length
