Ap. 5/ 78 Mimosa albida Seedling

No bloom on Cots — not irritable — at noon each stood exactly at right angle to Hypocotyl.— [insertion:] Ap. 16 repeated observation on sensitivity of Cots, & found them not so.

at 4° 30' the two formed angle of above 110°.

10°. 15' almost completely shut.— nearly vertical goes to sleep. [sketch]

Ap. 16. First true leaf like a short one of Mimosa or many Acacias. (embryology) consisting of a single petiole, with 2 or 3 leaflets on each side. No bloom. False — when lightly pinched or rubbed with bits of paper or syringed with very fine jet from Ether spray, they begin to move so instantly that I could not record the time with a stop-watch. The leaflets rise up alm approach apex, but do not close.

Rain-drops wd beat on them with less force — Petiole at the same time drops.

I have here seen leaves leaflets of old plant so sensitive as those of the first true leaf.— (over)

[1v]

Ap. 16'

The 1st true leaf sleep with all the leaflets in a vertical packet at end, each leaflet meeting its fellow & the posterior ones directed forwards — The petiole falls greatly.

With a seedling at this age the Cots. rise greatly at night & embrace petiole of young leaf. The Cots of a quite young seedling did not rise so much & formed together about angle of 80° & went thus far to sleep at a later hour.—

The second leaf is highly sensitive & of shape of mature leaf, with the little rudimentary leaf on basal pinna —

First true leaf good case of Embryology.— [sketch] Rudiment

(after 11 days Cots rose with first true leaf developed not sensitive)

Ap. 17th 1878 Mimosa albida

11° 30' pinned open first true first true leaf, with 3 leaflets on each side — pinned all & put drops of water on the 3 after brushing them slightly with camel-brush on one side Black streak.— I find that I was mistaken leaflets fairly well protected by bloom, for drops rolls off in spheres from the pinned flat leaflets

Ap. 26th tips of leaflets decayed, but no effects where water lay.—
