Mimosa pudica

Circumnutation & move of main petiole

Plant 7 1/2 inches high not very vigorous— Main petiole 1 1/2 inch long with fine filament affixed to it, [sketch] & traced on vertical glass, under skylight. Temp. on 28th. 24°C.; on 29th 72°–76° alm 22 1/2C.— No doubt wd have moved circumnutated much more, if observed in Hot-House— was watered on evening of 29' which may account for great rise on morning morning of 27th 30th — Was placed in position on evening of 27th & rose during night, as it did on 2 other nights

On morning of 28th between 6° 50' a.m & 2. 15' P.m. circumnutated much gong up & down 7 times. & then fell slightly till 10° 30' P.m.

Next day, which was rather cooler, (but whether owing to this cause, or to absence of brilliant light I know not,) fell in zig-zag course during whole day, & did not strictly circumnutate) rising after 9° P.m, & [illeg] continuing to rise all night & on morning of the 30th. till 10° 30', a.m when fell again. Tracing much magnified for end of main petiole was 13 inches from vertical glass.— —
