1862 Sensitive Plant— Mimosa

Oct 27th After giving plant steam-bath & making it sensitive I gave it f at 2°. 30', thirty drops of Ether for 10' no effect; added 20 drops more & left it for 30', was then quite sensitive & petioles became depressed - I used large microscope glass shade. —

Oct 28 Exposed plant at 2°. 30' for 30' to 30 minims of chloroform under microscope stand (large) no movement— The leave closed when touched; but footstalks when touched did not become depressed, so that in this singular way was rendered half insensible.—

at 10° 20' P.m. the footstalk had partially recovered sensibility.—

Oct. 30th. Leaves are barely depressed when touched.—

(I see Hedysarum gyrans droops its leaves downwards at night.)

See Mimulus paper all these observations useless & inaccurate

Nov. 5' at 2° 47' gave plant 60 gr drops of Ether in large vessel. (— ft deep & ft across cylinder 18 inch wide by 12 deep) till 3°. 45'. It was affected in interesting manner all leaflets when their basal glands were touched closed; but the excitement never spread either upwards or downwards to next leaflet. Even the opposite leaflet did not move. When gland at base of whole leaf was touched most of the leaves moved downwards; & in few cases when gland at base of pinnæ were touch the stimulus was carried down & leave became depressed. In no case did the pinnæ themselves move: these parts most affected.

(But mem, old torpid plant). Evidently chief or sole effect on mode of transmission of stimulus. In about 1° (ie 5°) I think the leaflet had opened again. 6°. 15' partially asleep.

7°. 30' several leaves sensitive, but no not asleep.— 9°. 30' not fully asleep.— 11° not thoroughly asleep: the sensitiveness now x
